Week 10 Summary (06/17/1957 - 06/23/1957)

Week 10 is in the books and it was quite a week. Only Chicago (NL) hasn’t reached the 60 games-played mark yet and there will be several teams at the 70 games-played mark by the end of Week 11. This will be another busy week and it will end with six doubleheaders thus coming Sunday.

1957 St. Louis Cardinals
There were a lot of big happenings this week, the most notable being that the White Sox went into Baltimore and lost three consecutive games and then went to New York and lost three more before ending their losing streak at six games. Now, all of a sudden, Chicago has several competitors nipping at their heels and their winning percentage, which has been over .800 for much of the early season, is now below .700. Detroit, New York, and Boston are all eager to take advantage of the White Sox troubles and continue to have their eyes on the prize.

St. Louis Manager
Fred Hutchinson
In the NL, upstart Pittsburgh went into St. Louis for a four-game series with intentions of taking sole possession of first-place in the NL. Instead, the Cardinals won all four and the Pirates now find themselves five games behind St. Louis, but only four games ahead of sixth-place Philadelphia with Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee all squeezed in between. Both leagues have tough pennant races shaping up as we approach the mid-point of the season.

Besides the pennant races, the big news was No-Hitter #4 as Chicago (NL) starter Moe Drabowsky followed up a  Dick Drott shutout game one of a doubleheader by only facing 28 batters on his way to his game two masterpiece. This was a rough week for Philadelphia and doubleheaders - after losing both to Chicago in midweek they went to Milwaukee and got swept in their Sunday doubleheader. Neither were shutouts, but in game one the Phillies only had two solo homeruns and in game two they only had one.

The two outstanding players so far in the replay are Ted Williams for the Boston Red Sox and Bob Friend of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Friend sports a nifty 14-2 record with a 2.03 ERA to lead the over-achieving Pirates to the tops of the NL standings. The actual Pirates were mired in last place but the replay Pirates have been a force. They are fourth in the NL in hitting and third in pitching - that may not get you a pennant, but it should keep you comfortably out of the basement.

Williams is currently on an active 58 game on-base streak and this past week bumped his batting average up to .429 after temporarily having let it slipped below .400 a few weeks ago. He leads the league in hits (88), runs (58), and RBI's (58), and is second in homeruns (18) and walks (52). The Red Sox are pretty pedestrian without him, but so far with him, they are twelve games over .500 and tied for third place with New York.

  1. Mr. Mills, you have really made this replay report quite excellent for a man of your years! Thank you

  2. 1957 has been quite a surprise to me as both league have numerous teams in the hunt. The favorites have just been hanging around, waiting for the early leaders to crash and burn so they can make their move.

Joe Adcock just broke his ankle, the Braves will bring up relief ace Don McMahon shortly, then Bill Bruton will get injured, so then they will bring up Bob "Hurricane" Hazle and his .400 batting average for the second half of the season. They really don't know it yet, but the second half Braves should be much better.

1957 World Series and Finale

World Series Preparations I have the lineups and pitching rotations from the actual World Series available, so that at least covers the Milwaukee side of the coin. The only real question for the White Sox is who plays first base and that is dependent upon a left or right-handed pitcher, so I will utilize their standard lineup and platoon accordingly. Both teams have a pretty set rotation that I will plug in, with Warren Spahn and Billy Pierce getting the game one, four, and seven assignments.   All of the regulars are hereby deemed healthy and ready to play, and I decided that Larry Doby was healthy enough to go full speed in the event of a World Series. He was "rested" for much of the last month of the season as it was, so I am going with "the White Sox were getting him ready for post-season play." I intend to bring a regular late-game defensive replacement for Doby, as needed.   When New York played Brooklyn in the 1949 World Series there were no off ...

1957 Team-by-Team Recap

Background This replay was completed using BBW 5.75 and a 1957-3R season disk. Actual gameplay started in mid-June 2020 and completed in mid-January 2021, so seven months to complete the regular season. There were probably 2-3 months of set-up and pre-season work time put in before gameplay started, but I haven’t actually played the World Series yet, so I am not quite done. If you want to just round it off and say it took me a year to complete, that is fine with me.   The 1957 disk and cards are actually a 3R set or a third revision. I do like the revised sets. Every player is carded (or disked), the cards include the Master Game symbols, and the offensive, defensive, and pitching numbers have been adjusted according to the current algorithms. The changes are not drastic, but I do think they even out some of the rough edges, especially in the area of pitching grades. I previously completed a replay using the 1949-R disk previously and was pleased with the outcome just as I wa...

Week 13 Summary (07/08/1957 - 07/14/1957)

Week 13 is in the books and the pennant races continue in both leagues. All teams except for Chicago (NL) have reached the 80-games-played mark and the Cubs will be there shortly. Many of the teams will be at 90 games played by the end of the upcoming week, so the replay marches on. This week was a short week as it started with a three-day All-Star break. No doubt many players needed a few days off for some mid-season recovery but it wasn't a break for the selected All-Stars as the 1957 All-Star game was played in St. Louis. This was the year that Cincinnati fans flooded the ballot box and five Reds players made the starting NL All-Star squad, requiring commissioner Ford Frick to intervene. The White Sox had gone on another tear recently and had bumped their winning percentage back up to .700 for a day, but they ended the week by losing both ends of a home doubleheader to the second place Yankees. The Yankees will start the upcoming week only 4.0 games behind Chicago, but the...
