Week 21 is in the books and it was another
fun and exciting week. The week started off with a full slate of doubleheaders
because of Labor Day and by the week's end the percentage of games played is
slightly ahead of the percentage of weeks played, so neither league is in a
position where teams are scrambling to make up final series. A couple of teams
have already wrapped up their season series against some opponents, so the end
is drawing near. Chicago (NL) has played the fewest games (135), meaning that
all teams now have less than 20 games remaining on their schedule. New York
(NL) has played the most (141), meaning they have only thirteen games remaining
in these final three weeks.Hank Aaron
The big event of the week was on Monday when
Chicago (AL) swept their Labor Day doubleheader in Detroit while New York (AL)
was getting swept in Baltimore. That resulted in the White Sox magic number
dropping from 22 to 18 in just one day. The Yankees are continuing to fight,
but I think the historians will likely point to the "Labor Day
Massacre" was the day that finally decided the 1957 AL pennant race.Luis Aparicio
In the NL, Milwaukee has opened up a 6.5 game
lead over St. Louis, plus they just got a bunch of injured players back on the
roster, and seem to be in a perfect position for getting their lineups and
pitching rotations set-up for postseason play. After their season-long malaise, the third-place Dodgers have finally gotten hot with a six-game winning streak
and are creeping up on second-place. Pittsburgh may have fallen out of
contention for the top spot but they are a sure bet to finish better than .500
and really crush their actual winning percentage for 1957.Whitey Ford
We are at that point in the season when most
teams take a peek at some of their younger players so there are plenty of major
league debuts coming up, and conversely, plenty of major league finale's as
well. Let's go meet these new faces, say goodbye to the old ones, and let's
play some games.George Kell
